Could you imagine yourself in a place like this?Dow has an opening for a Consumer Solutions Elastomers Process R&D Research Engineer located in Midland, MI. About YouThis research engineer position is focused on new product commercialization, process technology generation from concept to deployment in manufacturing, and development of subject matter expertise related to silicone elastomer technology including silicone materials and high viscosity compounding. You will support a portfolio of innovation projects within Dow Consumer Solutions that will deliver growth in the Mobility & Transportation, Consumer & Electronics and Building & Infrastructure major markets. You need to have a strong foundation in chemical engineering and a comprehensive understanding of manufacturing processes, with a focus on high viscosity processing. You will support and/or lead one or more projects of variable duration, with a focus on fundamental understanding, experimental investigation, practical technology scale-up and implementation to manufacturing. The projects will be time driven and often involve working cross functionally with product development, TS&D and Tech Center/M&E to develop customer focused solutions. It is essential that you understand all aspects of safety, including process safety, reactive chemicals, and industrial hygiene. Also, you will be responsible for the following tasks:Have the expertise or a network of subject matter experts to consult with for guidance on reactive chemicals, chemical compatibility, process safety, industrial hygiene, mechanical integrity, and material compatibility to be able to confidently and safely carry out project work.Set goals and milestones for yourself with direct R&D leader and business R&D teams.Complete identified and agreed upon Project and Team goals.Have a good understanding of Dow's intellectual property protection process, including patents, freedom to practice assessments, and proper documentation. Support and problem solve ongoing manufacturing and production support opportunitiesRole may include interactions across Dow's R&D functions, as well as external institutes and/or consortia.Successful projects may involve external collaborations with contract manufacturing facilities.Understand development of processes, scale-up, and management of samples campaigns. Manage and contribute to the synthesis of gram to kilogram quantities of products for the support of Dow business and R&D functions.Your knowledge, skills, and abilities include: Problem-solve by generating novel ideas and by creatively applying existing technologyUnderstand basic general knowledge of engineering issues relative to scale up (compounding/mixing, heat transfer, separation techniques, reaction engineering, catalysis etc.)Work independently to achieve results. Assistance will be provided in defining and prioritizing goals; however, you will eventually be expected to proactively identify and define future technology road-map direction and process technology development opportunities for silicone elastomers.Projects are conducted in a team-based environment. Success is achieved through the effective leveraging of cross-functional resources. You must interact well with others and be able to build & sustain effective relationships.Required Qualifications:A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or other Engineering disciplines is required.A minimum of 5 years of industrial experience is required. A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States.
