GENERAL SUMMARY:


The Graduate Nurse demonstrates excellent customer service skills in that his/her attitude and actions are at all times consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission, and Values of MyMichigan Health.This individual works under direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) mentor while carrying out designated skills that she/he has acquired in educational programs and/or orientation. The Graduate Nurse is not permitted to pass medications until licensure has been granted by the State of Michigan.
The Graduate Nurse, while providing direct patient care, functions under the direct supervision, direction and delegation of the RN mentor.


(30%)* Patient Care: Provides nursing care under the direction of the RN mentor using the Nursing Process: Prioritizes/organizes delegated patient care assignments. Accountable for all patient care assignments and documentation of all interventions. Performs technical nursing skills as outlined in standards and procedures manual and as described by unit-specific competencies. Engages in reinforcement of patient/family teaching as delegated by the RN mentor. Encouraged to be proactive in seeking learning opportunities. Completes orientation. Care planning for the shift with the RN mentor.


(30%)* Communications:Identifies and communicates changes in the patient s condition to the RN mentor. Demonstrates a positive personal approach and interaction with others.


(20%)* Unit Responsibilities: Maintains clean, safe patient care area. Handles equipment appropriately.Returns equipment to proper place after its use.Asks questions about its use when necessary. Considers cost in using supplies for patient care. Assists with completing patient census correctly.


(20%)* Personal Responsibilities: Demonstrates ability to give care cooperatively with other patient care team members. Actively participates in quality management and continuing education.Updates and maintains knowledge, skills, and competencies related to the area of practice and age(s) of patient population. Presents a clean and neat appearance according to the organizational dress code.


Nurse Residency Program - Graduate Nurse


MyMichigan Health is proud to offer an ANCC accredited RN Residency program for new graduate nurses. The RN Residency program, called the MyMichigan Health Transition to Practice Program, is an evidence-based curriculum offering new nurses a collaborative learning environment to successfully transition into clinical practice. Residents work alongside experienced staff and learn in a real-life setting to build skills and confidence to be better prepared as they enter the workforce. With our accreditation from the ANCC, you can rely on quality residency content, knowledge and experience of faculty, evidence-based practice, satisfaction of residents and most important, improved patient care and outcomes.


The MyMichigan Health residency program consists of didactic classroom learning, hands-on skills training, technology instruction, relationship building and other valuable tools to facilitate learning and a successful transition to practice.


Transition to Practice Sessions


The Transition to Practice Program is a comprehensive 12-month curriculum designed to assist new graduate nurses in the transition from an entry-level RN to a competent RN. The program focuses on building critical thinking and professional practice skills as opposed to specialty specific technical skills. During the program residents meet virtually every month for 2-hours.


Pathway Classes


As part of the orientation process, enrollment in the pathway classes is dependent on specialty unit. Pathway classes are offered for medical/surgical nursing, progressive care nursing, critical care nursing, and behavioral health nursing. Classes build on the foundation of nursing by providing the knowledge necessary to provide safe, quality patient care on specialty units. Residents are enrolled in their pathway at the time of hire and must complete their pathway within the first year. Classes are offered in-person or virtually and average from three to six hours per class.


Unit Specific Orientation


Upon hire, you will be paired with a skilled preceptor on your home unit. Over the course of your unit specific orientation, you will learn the skills necessary to become a competent nurse on the MyMichigan Health team. Reflection and feedback will be offered at the end of each shift as a way for the resident to learn and grow in their nursing practice. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


Demonstrates the ability to interpret information and reports pertinent data to the physician, including pertinent clinical information.


Assess learning needs considering readiness, ability, preferences, and cultural / spiritual variables.


Provide education to meet the individual needs and ability to learn.


Participates in care conferences as assigned.


Develops and maintains good working rapport with interdisciplinary personnel to meet the needs of each resident.


Demonstrates the ability to organize and prioritize the needs of groups of patients or an individual patient.


Demonstrates a general ability to manage assignments and perform routine duties on the unit.


Implements clinical and technical aspects of care in accordance with established policies and procedures.


Demonstrates understanding of clinical pathways and utilizes appropriately.


Remains calm and efficient when working in stressful situations.


Documents in an accurate, clear, and concise way and includes pertinent clinical data.


Shares information and reports significant changes and/or abnormal findings to appropriate team members.


Participates in regulatory surveys.Participates in the performance improvement activities.


Provides a safe and secure environment for patient care.


Remains current on new developments by reading professional journals, and attending seminars.


Demonstrates understanding of role in emergency preparedness procedure.


All other duties as assigned. REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:


HS Diploma required. Candidates who are in their final year of completing theirADN orBSNprogram may apply to this position.


BLS certification is required within 90 days of hire or transfer date.


Demonstrates ongoing competency in selected psychomotor skills.
The Graduate Nurse has three months to take and pass the RN State Boards or may be separated from the Graduate Nurse position at the manager s discretion.
Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.

An employee may be required to participate in further learning opportunities offered by MyMichigan Health. PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:


Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death. Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description. Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching. Some exposure to blood-borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health blood-borne pathogen and TB testing as required. Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis. Physical Demand Level: Medium. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 21-50 lbs., frequently 34-66% of the workday 20 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls and constantly (67-100% or the workday) 10 lbs.
