Job Description:
Summary Under general direction of nursing leadership, the
Specialist RN position may be responsible for any of or a
combination of the following: training, education, and quality
review of respective department(s). This position links nursing
leadership with nursing care through the application of
organizational and nursing service policies, procedures, and care
delivery model.The Specialist RN uses the Code of Ethics for Nurses
with Interpretive Statements to guide leadership and practice. The
Specialist RN attains knowledge and competence reflective of
current nursing practice; promotes innovation and futuristic
thinking by incorporating evidence based practice and research
findings.
(20%)* Maintains basic orientation programs for all staff and
students and provides input for all educational activities through
the HEAT team and has general oversight of the HEAT team. Evaluates
performance of staff in conjunction with the med/surg/OBS
supervisors/managers/director. Provides leadership, interprets
policies and procedures, and functions as a staff nurse as needed.
Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates a comprehensive basic
orientation program for all Registered Nurses (RN) and Patient Care
Technician (PCT) staff. (20%)* Implements orientation programs in
conjunction with the managers and facilitates the orientation
pathway. (20%)* Conducts formal and informal conferences with
designated orientees on a weekly basis and evaluates their
progress. (20%)* Provides training and review sessions for software
programs utilized by unit staff. Is the super user for the
department. (20%)* Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates
educational needs and programs for the Medical Surgical and
Observation Nursing staff through monthly in-services, annual
training, etc. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Provides input on
the performance of the staff in conjunction with the
supervisors/managers. Participates in quality improvement
initiatives within the department and the Medical Center.
Interprets policies and procedures and functions as a staff nurse
as needed. Is responsible for maintaining lines of communication
with peers, subordinates, and superiors within nursing services and
other departments within the Medical Center. Maintains high
visibility in the medical/surgical and OBS departments. Promotes
professional growth and development through effective leadership.
Performs coaching and counseling of employees as needed.
Coordinates and communicates with other departments' educational
needs that impact med/surg/obs. Collaborates with physicians, all
levels of nursing management and other departmental personnel in
planning for coordinated services to the patient. Participates on
or leads Nursing Service committees as appointed. Assures
compliance with the regulatory agencies standards such as The Joint
Commission (TJC), Centers for Medicare Services (CMS), the Michigan
Department of Public Health (MDPH), American Association of Medical
Instruments (AAMI), American National Standards Institute (ANSI),
Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN), and International
Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management
(IAHCSMM). MidMichigan Health is a technology driven organization

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS: Knowledge of nursing practices and
procedures as normally acquired through 3 years' experience working
in a Medical Center or similar setting. Knowledge of day-to-day
activities in med/surg and Leadership and teaching skills needed to
effectively direct a group. Interpersonal skills needed to
communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact
with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a
clear and understandable manner. Demonstrated strong leadership
organizational skills and ability to set priorities. MidMichigan

by MidMichigan Health. PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL
WORKING CONDITIONS:Exposure to stressful situations, including
those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and
death. Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes
latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your
position. Is able to move freely about facility with or without an
assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the
job as outlined in the job description. Overall vision and hearing
is necessary with or without assisted device(s). Frequently
required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require
frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially
infectious material. Must follow MidMichigan Health bloodborne
pathogen and TB testing as required. Ability to handle multiple
tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and
predictable attendance and ability to stay awake. Overall dexterity
is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and
feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to
frequent basis. Physical Demand Level: Medium. Must be able to
occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 21-50 lbs.,
frequently 34-66% of the workday 20 lbs. and or
Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls and constantly (67-100% or
the workday) 10 lbs.
