Job Description:
Summary
This position functions as a direct care provider to patients on
the Behavioral Health Unit. This includes ongoing assessment of
psychiatric patients, providing specific interventions as directed
by the treatment plan and documenting on the patient's functioning,
progress, and response to interventions. This position functions as
a team member, under the direction of the Registered Nurse and is
responsible for meeting the needs of all types of psychiatric
patients on the Behavioral Health Unit.
Under the direction of a registered nurse:
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Communicates information accurately and effectively (verbal and
written) to treatment team, to patients, families, and to other
appropriate agencies.
Demonstrates interest and pursues advancement of clinical skills
(asks questions, seeks feedback, shares articles, attends
continuing education opportunities, enrolls in classes).
Monitors the milieu in order to maintain a safe environment.
Identifies and intervenes appropriately in any potential
crisis.
Possess effective skills in crisis intervention.
Keeps updated on the use of nonphysical as well as physical
management techniques and implements using appropriate judgment and
according to established current policy.
Coordinates unit activities as appropriate.
Facilitate groups and other unit activities sponsored by staff,
students and volunteers.
Maintains patient dignity and rights. Collaborates effectively with
other departments and agencies on behalf of the patient.
Documents according to policy.
Monitor changes in patient status and appropriately reports the
same to the RN.
Participates in performance improvement projects.
Completes non-nursing components of the admission assessment in an
accurate, complete and timely manner.
Correctly completes basic care tasks such as obtaining vital signs,
weight, I&O, specimen collection and assistance with personal
care needs.
Correctly assesses and utilizes seclusion and restraints and
documents according to established current policy.
Behaves in a courteous, professional manner at all times with
patients, visitors, and co-workers.
Conveys a positive attitude and works with others to constructively
solve identified problems.
Knowledgeable about mental health code, patient rights and is a
patient advocate.
Follows medical center policy and procedures.
Has working knowledge of computers, phones, and the equipment on
the unit.
Knowledge of probate court activity and legal processes as related
to the mental health patient.
Responds to all disasters and codes promptly and correctly.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:
Bachelor's degree in psychology, social work, counseling, or
related field or completion within six months of hire or transfer
required.
Crisis Prevention Training (CPI) - Mandatory non-violent crisis
intervention and physical management training (CPI) within 90 days
of hire and updates annually thereafter.
Basic Life Suport (BLS) - BLS is required within 30 days of hire or
transfer date.
Mandatory Recipient Rights training within 30 days of hire and
annually
This position must show good interpersonal skills and the ability
to work with patients with a variety of needs.

Knowledge of inpatient behavioral health practices as normally
acquired through one-year experience working in the medical center
or similar setting preferred.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public
contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex
materials or appropriate substitute if required for your
position.
Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted
device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as
outlined in the job description.
Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted
device(s).
Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time.
May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or
crouching.
Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially
infectious material.
Must follow MyMichigan Health blood borne pathogen and TB testing
as required.
Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work
independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to
stay awake.
Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching,
grasping, fingering and feeling.
May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent
basis.
Physical Demand Level: Light. Must be able to occasionally (0-33%
of the workday) lift or carry 11-20 lbs., frequently (34-66% of the
workday) 10 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg
controls.
