Job Description:
Summary
The Medication Delivery Technician is responsible for the
coordination and delivery of discharge prescriptions to the bedside
of patients. Following a training period, the technician should be
able to determine eligibility for and enroll eligible patients in
the Meds-to-Beds program, fill and adjudicate prescriptions
received, deliver filled prescriptions to the bedside, and capture
payment for the delivered prescriptions.
(25%)* Gather, review, and interpret information from the
electronic medical record (EMR) and from other disciplines
(nursing, case management, etc.) to determine patient eligibility
for enrollment in the Meds-to-Beds program and enroll them. Once
enrolled, technician will ensure ongoing eligibility in addition to
gathering insurance information and correct routing of discharge
prescriptions to the correct pharmacy. Coordinate discharge
medication needs with case management, social work, floor nurses,
and at times, physicians.
(25%)* Fill and prepare discharge prescriptions for final
verification by pharmacist.
(25%)* Deliver completed and pharmacist-checked prescriptions to
the patients' bedsides. Collect prescription co-payment via the
cash register and point-of-sale software.
(25%)* Pull medications, order medications, and restock the
department. This will require conducting frequent and accurate
inventory counts and making purchasing decisions on medications
based upon par levels and anticipated future needs. Purchase
medications utilizing the appropriate software programs and
methods. Ensure that all supplies (labels, bottles, etc.) are
adequately stocked to meet patient discharge needs.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Compound oral and topical solutions, ointments, and creams if
ordered.
Create labels using the computer in an accurate and timely
manner.
Order supplies using appropriate system (Infor/Lawson, Staples,
etc.).
Answer questions from nursing, case management, and physicians
regarding co-payment & prescription costs for patients.
Process prior authorizations in a timely manner.
Work with case management to assist patients without prescription
insurance coverage.
This includes running discharge prescriptions for the cash price,
using A/R accounts, etc.
Receive drug deliveries from wholesaler.
Conduct accurate inventory counts and document all controlled
substance dispenses in the controlled substance log books.
Remove and return recalled drugs from physical inventory when
appropriate.
Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:
Pharmacy Technician Licensure required - New hires and transfers
before October 1, 2015 must possess a full technician license or
limited pharmacy technician license through the State of Michigan.
Incumbents before October 1, 2015 preferred to possess the CPhT -
National Certification for pharmacy technicians. Effective October
1, 2015, all incumbents, new hires and transfers to this position
must possess a valid pharmacy technician license through the state
of Michigan. The pharmacy technician license must be maintained in
order to be qualified to hold this position.
High School Diploma or GED required.
Computer experience required.
Good math skills, good organizational skills, a team player and
ability to work under high pressure and time constraints are all
required.
Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with
individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to
communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable
manner.

Medical Terminology knowledge preferred. Hospital or Retail
Pharmacy experience preferred.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public
contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex
materials or appropriate substitute if required for your
position.
Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted
device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as
outlined in the job description.
Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted
device(s).
Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time.
May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or
crouching.
Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially
infectious material.
Must follow MidMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing
as required.
Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work
independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to
stay awake.
Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching,
grasping, fingering and feeling.
May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent
basis.
Physical Demand Level: Light. Must be able to occasionally (0-33%
of the workday) lift or carry 11-20 lbs., frequently (34-66% of the
workday) 10 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg
controls.
