Job Description:
Summary General Summary This position is responsible for all
training of new and established employees in office and procedural
coding processes relating to major and minor surgical cases.
Additionally this position will perform quality audits of
established employees providing them consistent and on-going
feedback. The position is responsible for creating and updating
training and procedure manuals and materials. The position acts as
a resource for coding questions within the coding Resource
Department. The position monitors compliance with third party payer
guidelines while ensuring the maximum allowed reimbursement is
attained. This position requires broad knowledge of current payer
rules for all insurance companies we participate with in addition
to analytical skills to ensure all procedures are coded correctly
to ensure timely and accurate reimbursement from all payers. This
position must be able to work independently and make decisions
based on their broad knowledge of CPT and ICD-10 coding rules and
regulations. This position will also provide coding coverage while
the new employee is in training.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
(25%)* Coordinates education and
training for new and established employees of the Coding Resources
Team to ensure they are trained in a consistent and appropriate
manner according to coding guidelines. (25%)* Trains new and
established employees in office packet procedures and all major and
minor surgical cases, including obstetrics, performed in both the
office and hospital setting within 48 hours of receipt.
Communication with Coding Resources Supervisor regarding employee
progress during the training period. (25%)* Establishes and
monitors new employee productivity and quality standards. (25%)*
Responsible for accurate and timely processing of assigned office
coding including E/M, procedural and surgical coding. Research
coding guidelines using various resources for education purposes.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Stays current with knowledge of
coding changes and rules as appropriate. Develops materials for
departmental education based on findings. Acts as a resource for
all coding questions in the Coding Resources Department and provide
feedback as needed. MidMichigan Health is a technology driven
organization and employees need to demonstrate competency in
Microsoft Windows. Employees may be required to participate in
further learning opportunities offered by MidMichigan Health
EDUCATION,EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:
High School Diploma or GED required
Associates degree preferred with an RHIT designation, CPC, CCS,
CCSP, RHIT, or RHIA - Registered Health Information Technician
(RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).
Effective May 1, 2019 all new hires must be RHIA or RHIT eligible
and successfully complete the certification exam within six
(6)months of hire and maintain the certification to meet the
requirements of the position. Any MidMichigan Health employee hired
prior to January 28, 2020 and has a Certified Professional Coder
(CPC) or Certified Coding Specialist-Physician Office (CCS-P)
certificate, without an RHIT designation is grandfathered. They
must however maintain the certification to meet the requirements of
the position. Fingerprinting required. Four (4) years experience in
relevant working field with two (2) years experience with physician
coding and billing. One (1) year with direct physician contact.
Three (3) years physician coding and billing experience preferred
and two (2) years with direct physician contact. Must possess
strong leadership skills with ability to build and maintain team
dynamics and problem solving skills. Must have strong computer
applications knowledge. Knowledge of medical record/patient
confidentiality laws. Strong interpersonal, written and
communication skills required. Knowledge of medical terminology and
anatomy preferred. Prefer five (5) years experience in a healthcare
setting with extensive knowledge of CPT, ICD-10, HCPS and
documentation guidelines. PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Exposure to stressful situations,
including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief
and death. Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes
latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your
position. Is able to move freely about facility with or without an
assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the
job as outlined in the job description. Overall vision and hearing
is necessary with or without assisted device(s). Frequently
required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require
frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially
infectious material. Must follow MidMichigan Health bloodborne
pathogen and TB testing as required. Ability to handle multiple
tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and
predictable attendance and ability to stay awake. Overall dexterity
is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and
feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to
frequent basis. Physical Demand Level: Sedentary. Must be able to
occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 0-10 lbs.
