Job Description:
Summary
The Oncology Dietitian provides nutrition education and care across
the continuum of the cancer experience including primary
prevention, cancer treatment, secondary prevention, cancer
recurrence, survivorship and palliative care. The Oncology
Dietitian serves as the nutrition expert in Oncology Medical
Nutrition Therapy collaborating with the multi-modal comprehensive
cancer program at MyMichigan Health
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
(20%) Implements and maintains nutrition screening system for
cancer outpatients undergoing active treatment. Collaborates with
providers and staff to obtain referrals oncology patients that may
benefit from Medical Nutrition Therapy.
(50%) Counsels inpatients, outpatients and their families in
medical nutrition therapy and adapts diet and nutrition support
plans to meet specific individual needs. Establishes tube feeding
orders and recommends parenteral nutrition plans following best
practice guidelines. Evaluates and uses information on nutritional
supplements/indications for use and product composition. Documents
nutrition assessment, intervention, education and follow-up in the
electronic medical record. Uses International Dietetics and
Nutrition Terminology (IDNT) and the nutrition care process when
documenting patient care.
(20%) Provides education and presentations to staff and community
on nutrition topics related to cancer prevention, cancer treatment
and survivorship.
(10%) Participates on the Cancer Committee and Cancer Survivorship
Team attending meetings as required by the Commission on Cancer
Accreditation Program.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Maintains and applies in-depth body of knowledge of food and human
nutrition unique to cancer.
Participates in the education and training of new personnel,
residents and dietetic interns.
Compiles reports and maintains records in accordance with
established policies.
Serves as the primary dietitian resource for specialty area
(Oncology). Assists with policy and procedure development and
formulary review and decision-making.
Stays current with research and trends and serves as a resource for
inquiries from the healthcare team related to the specialty
area.
Acts as a resource for peers on nutrition issues related to
specialty area and provides continuing education each year based on
current research.
Complies with MyMichigan Health policies and procedures.
Other Duties as assigned.
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSURES
CDR - Commission on Dietetic Registered Required Equivalent
Experience - Registration by CDR for a minimum of three years
required.
CERTDIETI - Certified Dietitian Required Equivalent Experience -
Certification by the CDR as a Certified Specialist in Oncology
Nutrition (CSO). The Oncology Dietitian will be required to obtain
certification
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:
Ability to work independently to produce desired results.
Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with
individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to
communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable
manner.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public
contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex
materials or appropriate substitute if required for your
position.
Can move freely about facility with or without an assisted device
and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in
the job description.
Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted
device(s).
Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May
require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or
crouching.
Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially
infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne
pathogen and TB testing as required.
Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work
independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to
stay awake.
Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching,
grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these
movements on a regular to frequent basis.
Physical Demand Level: Light. Must be able to occasionally (0?33%
of the workday) lift or carry
