Job Description:
Summary
This position works under the direct supervision of the histology
section head assisting with coordinating the completion of the
daily workload in histology. Responsibilities include CoPath data
entry, routine and special testing on biological specimens,
immunohistochemistry procedures, assistance to the pathologists in
the gross examination room as necessary, preparation of biologic
specimens for send out to consultation laboratories, and equipment
maintenance, as well as any duties deemed necessary by the
histology section head.
(25%)* Embeds tissues flat and centered with accurate orientation
in proper size molds in a timely fashion to facilitate required
turn around times.
(25%)* Cuts sections as 3-5 microns and orients sections properly
on the slides.
(25%)* Performs routine Hematoxylin and Eosin staining, special
stains, and limited immunohistochemistry procedures (see #16 for
expanded immunohistochemistry) according to approved departmental
guidelines.
(25%)* Performs frozen sections procedures within the required time
frame while preserving tissue for paraffin embedding.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Must be able to recognize and troubleshoot problems with staining,
both routine H&E and special stains, and all histology
equipment and instrumentation and notify the section head of
unresolved issues.
Follows standard operation procedures with the department and
facility wide policies.
Maintain filing systems for pathology slides and blocks.
Prepares special reagents and chemical solutions.
Prepares biological specimens to be sent out to reference
laboratories for additional testing.
Maintain send out records for these specimens.
Maintains work area, equipment and supplies on a daily basis.
Performs and documents preventative maintenance on equipment
according to departmental policy.
Follows safety policy and protocol for MidMichigan Medical
Center.
Complies with chemical hygiene plan.
Maintains professional competence by attending histological
conferences and meetings, reading current literature and attending
laboratory in-service meetings.
Provides guidance to others as required to ensure the
accomplishment of daily workload.
Performs CoPath data entry.
May be called to perform as the Anatomic Pathology Safety
Officer.
One Histotechnologist will be assigned to complete
immunohistochemistry duties.
Performs IHC procedures both automated and manual if necessary.
Find and test tissue for acceptable control blocks for each
procedure.
Order and develop new procedures by repeated testing and conferring
with the pathologist and histology section head.
Completes all the testing and documentation necessary to offer
immunohisochemistry tests on tissue specimens.
This position will also perform and monitor existing
immunohistochemistry procedures, as well as procuring testing and
documenting all control material, and maintain all instrumentation
and reagents and documentation associated with immunohistochemistry
procedures.
Monitors and adjusts pH of buffers.
Participates in CAP Quality Improvement Surveys (HQIP) and CAP
required Proficiency Testing for Her 2 New procedures.
Maintain the MSDS and Spec sheets associated with
immunohistochemistry.
Assists the section head of histology in keeping the
immunohistochemistry procedure manual current.
Reviews maintenance and runs logs for error codes and responds as
necessary.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:
High School Diploma or GED Required
The histotechnologist performing the main immunohistochemistry
duties must have a minimum of 2 years experience performing
immunohistochemistry procedures or be IHC registered by the
A.S.C.P. preferred.
Registered or registry eligible, as a Histotechnologist (HT or HTL)
or equivalent within 6 months of hire by the American Society of
Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) Certification will remain valid for a
period of three years. In order to maintain certification, must
complete the Certification Maintenance Program (CMP) every three
years.
Basic knowledge of specific histology equipment including operation
and maintenance.
Ability to interpret and follow procedure manuals, maintains
supplies and utilize computer skills for data entry and information
retrieval.
Ability to work as a team member, communicate effectively, adapt to
changes in workflow, provide continuity in technique, recognize
limitations and request assistance if needed.
Mandatory tuberculosis (TB) testing must be done annually according
to MIOSHA (Michigan Occupational Safety Health Administration)
standards.
Mandatory Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
training must also be completed annually according to the Exposure
Control Plan.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public
contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex
materials or appropriate substitute if required for your
position.
Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted
device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as
outlined in the job description.
Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted
device(s).
Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time.
May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or
crouching.
Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially
infectious material.
Must follow MidMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing
as required.
Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work
independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to
stay awake.
Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching,
grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these
movements on a regular to frequent basis.
Physical Demand Level: Light.
Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry
11-20 lbs., frequently (34-66% of the workday) 10 lbs. and or
Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls.
